Best Of The Year - The 2012 Edition.

Comics Forever has become a very personal part of me. As time goes by I get to share in this place my personal view about comic books in what I think it may be the lightest way possible. Of course there are times when my awesome followers, as great as they are, manage to piss me off (that’s why I have a Rants! link on my main page). But all in all this is a place where I come to enjoy comic books and share my love for them with like minded individuals like you. Again another year has come and (almost) gone and it’s again that time of the year where I want to share what it was the best of the best for me about comics and their portrayal in the various media that make the life of the geek so worthwhile and full of joy. On I go!:

Best Comic Book Series: Uncanny X-Force (Marvel Comics)

image

The X-Men where at the front center of many things in this year. The AvX event took most of the time in the main books to say a great story. However this book was focused on a single story. The continuing adventures and misadventures of Logan’s squad, the ones he personally gathered after the second coming. A team of mutants focused on dealing with problems that could endanger the existence of mutantkind in a definitive way. This book was written in his whole run by Rick Remender and illustrated by the likes of Jerome Opeña, Phill Noto and Mark Brooks. It has no ties to any other X-Book and every number published in 2012 is pure gold. It probably is the greatest X-Men book ever published since The Claremont/Byrne era.

Best Comic Book Moment: Captain America recruits The Hulk - Avengers Vs X-Men #11 (Marvel Comics)

image

I can’t explain the chills this moment sent down my spine with accuracy and objectivity. I can only write for you what Cap told to an unseen figure for a whole page until this image:

“I’m sorry to come to you like this. You know I respect you and your space. I would never come to you unless I was at the end of my rope. And I am at the end of my rope. I don’t know if you know we’ve been at war with the X-Men… no, we’ve been at war with Scott Summers, Cyclops. They… He has a power cosmic called the Phoenix and we cannot win the fight in front of us. We can’t win it. Everything keeps escalating — I’m worried about what might happen next. I’m worried that the power they are holding is more than the one they can handle. In fact I know it is, everyone knows it but Scott Summers. What happen when they are not able to handle it any longer?… So I need more than I have. I need more firepower. So I’m coming to everyone. I’m coming to you. I don’t know how you feel about what’s going on with the X-Men but I was hoping that with our history together— I was hoping you would join us. I know you, I know you only fight a fight worth fighting, and I’m telling you this is one of those fights. If we lose this, we lose everything. Will you help us. Please?”

Best TV Show - Breaking Bad (AMC)

image

Not derived from a comic book in any shape or form. It’s hard to give this spot to something like “The Walking Dead” or “Arrow” when there’s this monster out there. With a powerful cast, some of the most solid writing and a pacing that will have you biting your nails waiting with anticipation for what comes next. Breaking Bad is proof that these days quality TV for the intelligent viewer can be produced among a sea of ridiculous reality shows.

Best Movie: The Avengers (Marvel Studios/Disney)

image

Pound for pound this movie delivers in every sense of the word. You want humor? check. You want drama? check! you want character development? check!, you want a solid story? got it. You want a closure point to a 5-year plan to deliver a cohesive universe of movies set in one continuity? that’s covered son. I’ll have no discussion about this: The Avengers is the comic book movie of the year. The bonus for me was that it squashed Batman in the box office, setting a high record for any comic book movie to try and topple.

Runner-Up: The Dark Knight Rises (Warner Brothers)

image

The closing chapter of the Nolan Trilogy was just a mere round-up of dangling plots opened since Batman Begins. The more serious hit this saga took was losing one of his writers (David Goyer) and it shows. Also the fact that the main character of the film is only seen for about 34 minutes in an almost 3-hours long film, the villain was just a friend-zoned jock with a smart mouth and the closing made no room for Bruce Wayne to be Batman if Warner were to use the ideas set in these movies for their upcoming JLA film.

Album Of The Year: Deftones - Koi No Yokan (Reprise Records)

image

What can I say? I’m a sucker for 90’s band and Deftones still sounds as great as ever for me!

Videogame Of The Year: Saint Seiya - Senki (Bandai)

image

Take away from my eyes those terrible and boring as hell shooters and give me something to smash buttons until I can’t feel my fingers anymore from giving beatings to unending arrays of enemies. Third person please, because I like to see the guy I’m using to beat the shit out of everyone. A game based on the beloved anime (and the stars of my second blog Saint Seiya History) it’s just a dream to play with. You can get various renditions of the main characters, the ability to play alternate storylines or complementing ones from the main saga, even custom settings to make your character more strong the more you play. Most of you won’t have even heard of this game. But it’s the best damn thing ever released on this year for the PS3.

Action Figure Of The Year: Thunder Punch He-Man (Mattel)

image

So far, the Masters Of The Universe Classics line has been a hit for collectors of the old series or guys running on nostalgia like me. This guy here was the He-Man action figure I was always talked about as a kid but I never got to see it until the internet. When the new version was offered on Mattycollector at the beginning of the year I knew right there that no matter how many action figures I bought on the year I already had my Toy of the year. I could go long about the differences between the original and this one, but this is just a toy that looks cool, it’s articulated as hell and it’s a piece of my childhood I reclaimed now that I have disposable income.

So there you have it! this was in more or less words (and pictures) the best of the best this year, of course that I enjoyed a lot more things but well… I’m sure that I can’t make a post that goes on for more long than this one. Have something to say about this list? Go to my ask box! Thanks for reading!
